Using BC Performance Standards
The BC Performance standards give teachers
an additional, valuable tool in assessing students' abilities to
apply their learning in realistic performance tasks in the areas
of reading, writing, numeracy and social responsibility. Used
with other methods, they can be an important part of a comprehensive
assessment and evaluation system. Based on a Not Yet Meeting Expectation
through to Exceeding Expectations scoring guide, the standards give
a clear picture to teachers and parents of how a child can improve
their learning and their output. Hear what children are saying about
the standards.
The standards should be used
within the context of ongoing classroom instruction. They are
meant to be curriculum-embedded and used as part of regular classroom
learning activities.
Schools that have been most successful in
using the standards to improve student learning use of a combination
of methods including:
-
embedding the standards school-wide and cross-curriculum
-
providing students with samples of good work
or behaviors
-
using performance quick scales for peer assessment
as well as self-assessment
-
and using standards that have been written
in child-friendly language that all students can understand.
See sample quick scales below
Performance standards can be adapted as needed. This might mean creating scales for grades not included in the standards, developing Individual Education Plans or other tailored evaluation, or adjusting expectations for different times of the year. An example is to use reading standards in social studies and science as well as literature arts. Again, child-friendly language is critical to success in student self-evaluation.
